Not everyone’s built for this city; it has an edge that can wear you down if you let it. I personally have always felt energised by the pace and used it as inspiration. Growing up in Carlingford (in the Parramatta region) I was surrounded by hills and the smell of conifers, but also 5 minutes walk from a Westfield, which made for some great bike riding and a few too many close calls on my hand painted skateboard.
In this Sydney series, i’ll be creating a mix of my favourite places growing up, and other iconic places that I think sum up life in this town…starting with home.

I could write a book on this quarter acre and the memories it gave me, but all i’ll say is i’m thankful for the childhood I had there and the family I shared it with.
It’s where I spent my first 26 years, and somehow every time I go back I revert back to my younger (sometimes much younger) days.

I never spent much time here (and I wasn’t around when it looked like this), but the few times I went it was for the music. There were a couple of multilevel industrial / gothic clubs in the area, one right in the heart of the sleaze strip.
Love it or hate it, it’s a part of Sydney history and makes for some great photography during the day…just get out before dusk and you’ll be ok.

BALMAIN
Not somewhere i’ve been often, but every time I did I loved it. The old sandstone buildings, awesome food and atmosphere, and then the view across the water from Illoura Reserve was pure magic.
I also have a memory of a new years eve party there…easily the biggest night (and following day) of my life, but that’s a story for another time… but that’s why I decided to have some fun with the signage in this.
The location is the intersection at Darling and Johnston Streets.

ROXY THEATRE
The Roxy in Parramatta was one of my favourite buildings, and one I spent a lot of time around. There was a carpark directly behind that I used every week for years (going to classical guitar lessons above the mall).
I saw a few movies there and other events, but my favourite was an AC/DC event. When their live album came out in the early 90’s, my local music shop ‘Le Disc’ sold it with a ticket to see the live (recorded) concert at the Roxy. From memory it was a rainy midnight session, that’s why I included rain in this artwork.

I’m always on the lookout for reference photos from the 50’s - 90’s.
